Hand Update

By in Griping, seriously?

I returned to the Emergency room for a look-see and fresh bandages. I’d been dreading it, knowing how a big gooey wound can crust up. The doctor that removed it was good-firm but fair. He soaked it in sterile water to loosen things up and told me it was ok to swear if necessary.  It was, a little.  He thought it looked good, no infection, not too swollen.  Then he had an RN bandage me up and that was when the shit hit the fan, that guy was rough and caused me more pain than the burn had caused ’til then.  He kept pressing really hard, even when I asked him not to and eventually I screamed at him and burst into tears. Jackass. I hope the nice nurses are back Tuesday for visit #3.

Pictures, but after a break. Not that they’re NSFW, but they’re really horrific. At least to me.

I might take more pictures on Tuesday but I doubt it will look any different.

OMG! OW! I hate burns *shudder*. My husband burned himself terribly when he was a teenager and to this day he has problems with boiling water.

    Hopefully it’ll get better soon.

And may that mean nurse get the same treatment when he’s in pain.

  2. Hannah says:

Poor thing! I hope it gets better soon, as well.

Holy mother of effing painful smoke… ow-sh!t!

OK, sorry. I regularly read your blog but not so regularly comment… I really did feel the need to comment this time.

That looks so, so so sore!

  5. Steph says:

    Good grief lady!
You know, strangely enough after working in a kitchen all these years I have been exceptionally fortunate when it comes to burns.
That looks miserable and I would have kicked that RN in the nads because I know how bad a 2nd degree burn hurts!
Here’s to hoping you heal nice and fast!

  7. cj`s sis says:

All these comments just cheered me up so much I started laughing. I go through these waves of forgetting anything happened, then I bash it or I want to do anything that requires 2 hands and I feel really stupid and sad. Mostly just really stupid.

My neighbor came over and braided my hair, that was so nice. And everywhere I go, in stores and stuff, people are extra kind and helpful. I think that keeps me from totally losing my shit.

    So thanks. Support sure helps.

My question is: How was the next cup of coffee?

  13. Jay says:

That’s awful! Hope you heal up soon or at least the pain subsides soon!

  14. MissJanet says:

I’m late to the ouch party, but still: OUCH! Looks terrible. Do you know how long the healing process will be?

  15. Caitlin Jane says:

I am told about a month to heal and 6 months for it to look normal again. Shouldn’t be any scarring. Man, it’s so hard to be optimistic at 4am and it is super achy.

  16. Allahkat says:

It’s nice to know there’s someone else awake this early.

  17. David says:

Wow! That looks super painful! Hope it gets better fast!

  18. Twwly says:

HOLY FUCKING SHIT I am throwing up inside my mouth.

OW OW OW Did you punch that stupid bandage motherfucker in his balls?

I will never forget having a bandage change by a nurse on my finger. Took once, after that I did it myself.

Have I said HOLY FUCK OW?

    OW!

Ugh. We saw some of those little coffee doohickeys in the coffee shop the other day and they freaked me right out, though they were in their boxes.

OW FUCK OW OW OW OW

    Feel better soon.

    OWW HOLY FUCK OW

I saw him today but I had doctor #3 and nurse #1, so it all went well. I’m a lot swollen and bled like crazy, but they thought it looked fine and set me up to see a plastic surgeon. I also realized that the rest of the back of my hand is burned too, but first degree so that went unnoticed, eclipsed by the pink shine.

Back for round 4 on Thursday. I know my favorite nurse won’t be there though. She told me she’s extra sympathetic because she’s had 2 bad burns in her life.

  20. Gillian says:

HOLY FUCK SHIT. SOOOO much worse than I’d imagined.

  21. Caitlin Jane says:

I know, right? I think those pictures gave Ari nightmares.

  22. Twwly says:

Yeah, we did NOT show them to the kids. I think I’ll be having nightmares!!

We have a huge pot of water on the woodstove, you know to help the house from getting so dry. Make that HAD…

  23. Jessica says:

Read your blog but never comment. I had a similar burn last summer on my leg, poured boiling water on it accidently (obviously). Did they give you that silver sulfide cream yet? It really helped me. Hope you feel better soon.

  24. Jamie says:

Well hope it’s getting better hon, and if the evil nurse is there let him know you know someone in the states who is armed to the teeth and has access to hog confinements! LOL

  25. andrea says:

awww omg.. owie. :( I hope that day by day it gets better for you, or that you get some good pain medication. Wow, i’m so sorry this happened to you:(

  26. When I saw the skin peeling off the very first thing I thought of was the guy that fell into the fire in one of the very first seasons of Survivor and had to be airlifted out. He had the very same instant peeling. That and the Nazis getting melted in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

  27. Dana says:

I, too, read your blog and don’t ever comment. Until now. I just wanted to say that it hurts to look at the pictures and also to tell you thanks. Thank you for posting this because now I will be a lot more careful with boiling water. It’s so easy to become complacent with simple, daily tasks. I hope your recovery is speedy and as painless as it possibly can be. Best wishes and good luck. :)
