Baking, baking, brain breaking

By in food, Griping, hmmmm

So, first off, which one of you smarties can tell me the diff between brioche and challah? The recipes I’ve read for either seem pretty much interchangeable. Of course I know I must be wrong but…

I was tasked with finding a recipe for and making brioche hamburger buns and mini baguettes. Sounds easy, I guess, if you’re some kind of Buffy-Jo Bakesalot, which I’m not. Sure, I can make banana bread and cake and cookies til the cows come home but anything involving yeast? GTFO. Had to do it though, had to suck up my fears and do it.

Miracles of miracles, they came out pretty well. I mean, they taste great and the crumb is super soft and spongy and they smell like delicious. Shannon is going to eat them all before bed with jam.

Seriously, I’m pretty proud of these guys. Baguette dough? Total disaster that is getting tossed before bed. I’m also making no-knead bread (will be shaped into buns, could work!) but that’s for tomorrow. All this is everything to do with my future.

Also I made this quilt top that I love. Once it’s actually quilted? Very heavy, very metal, very much the other part of my future.

Challah shouldn’t be made with egg, because it’s supposed to be kosher. :) Brioche has eggs in it, otherwise – pretty much the same!

Oh, that is so weird, I thought the whole thing with Challah is that it’s egg bread. But what you write makes total sense, thanks!

The bread looks great. You got a beautiful color and crust on it. I bet it tastes awesome. I LOVE the baby quilt. I’m making my brother a baby quilt for his upcoming addition. Are you going to be selling any quilts in that style at all? I would love to buy one from you if so.

  5. Caitlin Jane says:

I will be selling baby quilts, I’m just waiting to get a pile of batting and I can finish them off. I’ll let you know, Chris, via twitter, when this one is done and you can have first dibs.

Think you could make something cool to cover my obnoxious “boot” it’s so boring, and I’ll be wearing it for several weeks!

  8. Caitlin Jane says:

Jamie! Poor you, oh, awful for summer, I’m so sorry for you. I’d get some Velcro and hot glue that on and then some fringe, real swingy stuff, or maybe pompon tape, Velcro on them so you can switch things around. Lots of sequins. Heal up quickly!

  9. Jamie says:

Ohhhhh, I may have to break out the glue gun! If I have to wear the stupid thing at least I can make it SPARKALY!!!!!!!!!!!! (I’m pretty sure that’s spelled wrong! )
