Lentil Dahl

By in food

I was just going to type out this recipe in notes and then it occurred to me that other people might enjoy it too. I wish I could give credit to the person I got it from, if you happen to read this and recognize the measurements, please tell me. That said, I have made some minor changes.

I like this recipe because it makes a reasonable amount, about three bowls. Of course if you ate it with rice you could make it go a lot further but I eat it as soup, on it’s own.

1 onion, diced
1/2 a green pepper, diced
1 carrot, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbsp ginger, minced
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp coriander
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/4 tsp cayenne
1 cup red lentils
2 1/2 cups broth

Sauté the onion, green pepper and carrot in some oil for about 4 minutes. Add garlic and ginger, cook another 2 minutes and then add all the spices and cook until really fragrant, another 2 minutes. Add lentils and broth, bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer until the lentils are soft, 15 minutes. Serve with a squeeze of lemon and maybe some chopped up cilantro if you have it.

It’s warming and delicious! I think, if you’re inclined, that adding other veggies, like spinach or peas or a tin of rinsed chick peas, would be very nice too.

Will try it this weekend and will leave a review, xoxo

Made it and only changed a couple of things. Red pepper instead of green, a large clove of garlic and some salt and pepper. Used your suggestion to throw in a couple of big handsful of spinach and the result? Definitely worth repeating. I froze some for another time. xoxo

I think I put 3 garlic in last time I made it. And I always think that salt and pepper are implied! Glad you liked it!

I love me some dahl. Oh, I do. I put soya milk in mine. I have no entire if this is an entirely sane thing to do, but it definitely tastes nice.

I’m sure adding almost anything to Dahl makes it tastier! I’d just hope you would warn me (in the unlikely event you’re feeding me) because I’m allergic to soy!

    Hiya Caitlin,
Lovely to hear from ya! We are both doing good, but as always, too busy! Work takes up a lot of time, though it’s a rewarding job, and then trying to fit in my MA on top of that. We’d a lovely hol in Portugal during the summer though…we joined some Irish friends who have ahouse there. Gave us a real taste for getting out of the rat race for a while, so when we got back we began to hatch a plan to do something about it. It’s not forever, but we have both applied to take six months off next June-dec. Our friends have offered us the use of their house we holidayed in, so we will hopefully head to Portugal in June. I’ll have the summer to complete my thesis there, and come back to Ireland to submit it, in august. Then, hopefully, we’ll still have three months to travel? Where, we do not know? Though Gary has never been to the states, so we have talked about that. And of course, if we are going to the states, then we simply couldn’t miss out on a visit to Toronto. Who knows, we may even end up doing some kinda canadian oddessy-type affair…which we’ve also talked about….
Anyway, as a result of this loose ‘plan’, we have to save like mad – which means we’ll be at home for Xmas, for the first time in 8 years….kind of nice for a change though..and we’ll get to catch up with mates properly. The savings plan is on hold this weekend though, we’re off to London for oldest friends 40th birthday. I haven’t had a shopping spree since the Toronto sales, and am salivating at the thoughts of a mooch around Selfridges….I can smell it!
Hope things are good for you? Kisses to Toronto please! XxxxDavid
