I read a post on thehairpin about nails a couple weeks ago and was inspired. I’ve always liked nail polish (despite the normal, raggedy state of my fingernails) and already had a decent collection but decided to buy some of the skinny bottles and do some experimentation.
Let’s just say that it wasn’t easy at first. I’m right handed, almost comically so, and my right hand (painted by my left) looked like shit. My left hand may as well belong to a different person as far as my brain commanding it is concerned. I’m getting better.
Here’s my small collection of skinny bottles (they have a long, skinny brush). I love the sparkly ones. I don’t remember where I got them (I think Walmart and Guardian) but I know it wasn’t Shopper’s. They have a crap selection of nail polish: too highbrow a store I guess!
And here is today’s nails:
I know they’re not perfect, I’m practicing. But I get tons of compliments (oddly, mostly from teenage girls who work cash at the grocery store) and that’s nice. My last attempt was light purple with green at my cuticles and fuschia on the tips. Lovely!
I’m heading to Target in less than 2 weeks and my only real goal there is to get a ton of the Sally Hanson nail strips. I can’t find them anywhere here, wahhh! I want ALL of them!

i dont know if you care, but sally hanson tests on animals. and when polish tests on animals, they dont paint their nails, they force their eyes open with clamps and stick polish in the puppies eyes:(
regardless, you can clean off your cuticles in the shower. at the end of your shower, when your cutiles are nice and wet, you can scratch it right off.
Yeesh, I was going to make a light-hearted comment about your nails but the previous comment kind of ruined my day. No offense, but the thought of those poor animals! :(
Which tar-jay are you going to? You doing a Detroit run? Or are you shuffling off to Buffalo?
Honestly, I don’t know HOW I feel about that. My knee jerk reaction is like WHOA I DONT LIKE! DO NOT LIIIIKKKEEE!!! But then my heart wants that nail sticker stuff. And I use other Sally Hansen products too. Ought I to just throw them out? Didn’t a rabbit already die for it? Ugh. I don’t know.
I mean. Ok, so but there are other nail companies and products and I can use other greener, kinder companies and that’s probably best. But there isn’t anyone else making these sticker things.
And I still want them.
I’m a monster.
Ali, I’ll be visiting the one in Niagara Falls, NY. It’s on Military Road, if you need to know. I can be more specific on time the day before, ok? And I’ll be expecting you to meet me there for a pretzel and 100 hugs.
i would say to use what you have, but dont buy any more. no need to further support the torture of those poor animals. and there are plenty of quality polishes that dont test on animals if you are willing to spend a bit. orly, opi, china glaze, zoya, etc.
er, but none make the stickers, you are right.
I bought a nail art kit at a kiosk at the National Home Show (of all places) last year and it’s pretty damn cool.

The nail pen is a lot more accurate than the skinny brush.
Hi Katy, please come over tomorrow with your nail kit and do the shit out of my nails, thanks! (I go to the Royal Winter Fair each year and they’re always there too).
Sarah, yep. Thanks.
Oh how I wish I could go in for manicures and get kick ass nails! Or even just do them at home…
Alas I am a Chef so must stick to toenails which are in sad, sad shape. I am making a point to go in for a proper pedicure and soon!
Cait I also have the Konad nail printing dealie. http://www.thenailart.com …I’m not obsessed or anything..!
Printmaking and insane nails, a match made in heaven.
We got the Barbie digital nail printer the other day. It’s neat, it prints right onto your nails, but it’s a little finicky and doesn’t last. But the potential is there.
