My new neighbour (and old room mate!) Kerrick is an avid knitter (and way WAY more of an expert at it than I!) and loaned me her ball winder so I could do some stash tidying…
40 balls later…
Pretty, huh? I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed using that winder, I found it very relaxing. And frogging old projects that had been sitting around for a long time gathering dust, also good. Funny that Shannon almost seemed jealous of it too, ha!
I returned it today and also gifted her 4 of the balls, so I did do a little busting at the same time.

How supremely satisfying! A simple task, a simple gadget…but the sense of accomplishment unrivaled!
Is it too nerdy to be jealous?
Not too nerdy at all! You should just buy a winder and offer to wind balls for people, like, put up a flier at the local laundromat.
Unless you have a cat. My Rose is about 16 years old, but she was on her haunches ready to attack that ball of yarn flopping around on the floor.
wow. TIDY! ;)
I broke down and bought one last year, and haven’t ever looked back. It’s kind of expensive to get both the swift and the winder… Buuuuut, somehow i justified it. I just had to wind 1200 metres of laceweight, and i’m GLAD i had the winder. I dont’ think i could’ve done it by hand. ;)
Amazing stash! What are you knitting/crocheting next???
Right now I am knitting that sweater for myself in dark red/gold Malabrigo (which is slow, but I do try to do at least 4 rows a night, which is not a lot, no where near enough, but it means I haven’t given up yet) and a small baktus type neckerchief, but starting from the bottom corner and working up, adding a kfb at the end of each row. Easy to remember that way. I’m using Noro Aya for that, I love that yarn, it’s the prettiest stuff ever and feels great-and has been discontinued!! You can see the ball in this picture, actually, it’s multicoloured, right above to the left of the biggest light yellow cake, to the right of the orange/blue/white sock yarn.
And remember, this is only one of three bins of yarn I have! SCARY!
Scary? or Amazing?!?!
We don’t have a cat, but I have a feeling that Ella would find unwinding yarn whilst I wound it to be loads of fun.
i’ll keep an eye out for Noro Aya at any wool stores i visit. I’m going down to Shall We Knit in New Hamburg tomorrow i think, so i’ll check there. :)

I got an extra ball of it yesterday and there’s buckets of it still at Romni. The Noro sock yarn’s on sale there, $12 a ball, which is really cheap-not that I am into that yarn, it’s too slubby for me.
If anyone hears of a winder for cheap, lemme know. They’re $70 at Romni-forget about that.
