Babies

By in babies

Seems everyone I know is pregnant these days. Or has just had a baby. Or is just wrapping up their baby-making business.

Not me. I went for a long time wanting a baby, then a long time not wanting a baby, back to wanting one. Now it seems it’s too late for babies for me. Don’t assume you know why.  Here’s a clue: it has nothing to do with my age, ok? If things had gone according to plan, I’d be caring for a 9 month old kid by now, but things rarely do go according to plan.

I only bring this up because I’d posted something on facebook and the first comment was asking me if I were ‘preggers’.

Please stop asking me that. Just stop. It’s not going to happen and I don’t really like explaining myself. Although I have found that I can make the asker pretty damn uncomfortable with brute honesty.

This is the sweater I am knitting. It’s just about the cutest thing I’ve ever made, and I’m pretty proud of it. A pattern (beware, pdf file!) recommended to me by Twwly. I am almost done the body and will work on the sleeves after. I’ve got cute buttons picked out. Oh, I’ll post pictures when I am done.

Ok. And here’s the deal: any “kind”  comments on this post that upset me will be deleted. If you really feel the need to say anything personal to me, feel free to drop me an email, ok? Otherwise, just say how cute the sweater is, that’s enough.

It IS really a cute little sweater. What is the green yarn for?

  2. Jana says:

That sweater is adorable. And I was thinking that before I scrolled down far enough to see you comment.

    Adorable, adorable, adorable!

    p.s. lunch soon?

  3. Jamie says:

that is soooooooooooo flipping adaorable! Again your craftiness skills amaze me :)

  4. Steph says:

One of these days I WILL learn how to knit!

    Very, very cute :)

  5. Rach says:

I love the pink and green! I hate the word “preggers”, though, and “preggo.”

  6. Caitlin Jane says:

MissJanet, the green yarn is just holding live stitches that I will go back to for the sleeves (rather than casting off and knitting them separately). It creates a seamless sweater!

Jana, lunch soon. I want to be in your neck of the woods soon anyway, to snoop around Fabricland.

    Jamie, thanks!

Steph, what’s holding you back??! Learning to knit is as easy as watching a youtube video these days! And thanks!

Rach, agreed, preggers and preggo just bring to mind fat, sweaty, swollen, ugly. I’m somewhat torn on buttons, I am having a hard time choosing between white pearly ones or bright green ones that would match the frog (that’s covering a dumb mistake).

    Pink+Green=Preppy.

I am soooo scared to say anything except something about the sweater. Which is adorable. I swear. I MEAN IT!

  8. Lea says:

Do you sell any of the super cute stuff you make?

  9. Laura says:

You SAY that knitting is easy, and I suppose the basics are not hard. I, however, run into trouble if I try to watch a movie, or carry on a conversation or do anything at the same time as knitting. I have to count and recount my stitches and end up with row after row of mistakes etc.
I wish I could make something as beautiful as the things you do.

  10. Caitlin Jane says:

Lea, no, not really. I suck bad at making stuff on demand. And then my feelings get hurt when I give something away and I know it’s not appreciated. Although I suppose that if I made something and someone said, hey, I’ll send you $X for that, I’d probably be ok.

Laura, haha, I know what that’s like. I’m still not good at multitasking although I do find it’s easier to knit and watch tv than to crochet and do…anything.

Knitting isn’t easy, but I do think anyone can do it. You start with scarves and when that gets boring, move on to hats. Then mitts (which I haven’t got to yet) and so on. This baby sweater is a major anomaly for me.

  11. Steph says:

What’s holding me back? Money, laziness, or my ability to get super excited about something dive in with both feet with sheer gusto and then I get bored with it and move on.

Although I want to attempt to quit smoking so that should keep my hands busy!

Love the quilt too, you have some serious talent lady, embrace it :)

  12. Carmen says:

I think the buttons should definately match the frog, which is too cute!

  13. Kerri says:

Isn’t the frog a bit of a choking hazard? It’s cute but I can’t imagine my baby getting his hands on something like that.

  14. Caitlin Jane says:

Steph-keep quitting, you can do it!

Kerri-it’s no more of a choking hazard than any button and thousands-perhaps millions-of teeny tiny baby sweaters have been worn by babies over the years and they pretty much all survive. This is a sweater for a tiny newborn baby who-trust me here-would not have the strength to yoink off any buttons nor have the dexterity to aim for and hit her mouth.

If her mother has even the smallest doubt about the buttons, I will tell her that snipping them off won’t offend me too much. But I am not even worried in the slightest.

  15. Collette says:

totally cute sweater! I keep making slippers. I like that I can whip ‘em up quickly and without much thought. I’d like to make other things, though, I’m just too lazy (and, well, also busy I guess but I could make time). I made a baby blanket once that took eight months — LAST time I’ll do that! luckily, the folks I made it for loved it and it’s been well-used. when the kiddo was little, any time I’d run into them the blanket would be in the stroller. I’m so glad it was useful to them!

that sweater looks fun and interesting to make. I like knitting in the round.
