Listening.

By in Art!

Being new to the iphone sphere, I’ve been immersing myself into the podcast universe. I’ve found plenty I like a LOT but I know there must be more out there that I am missing. The nice thing about the phone is that there’s the notes feature so I have been keeping a list of my preferred podcasts, making it easy to go back and look for more. I wish there was a recommendation feature too (as in, you liked this, you might like that sort of thing) and I also with there were more podcast review blogs that were current. Anyway, here’s my shortlist of (free) podcasts I enjoy:

  1. The Moth
  2. Storylife
  3. This American Life
  4. The Spark
  5. DNTO
  6. PRI: Selected Short Stories
  7. CBC’s Laugh Out Loud

I’ve also enjoyed some Harry Potter stuff (mostly at night because it’s pretty boring and long winded and puts me thoroughly to sleep).  The CBC really has a million different things, I’ve also listened to  Vinyl Cafe and Wiretapped, both are good, and I’ll probably get lots more different stuff there. Like The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos (Oh! Strombo!).

If anyone has any further ideas for me, I’ll gladly take any and all advice.

I recommend the SnobCast. Ella and I listen to it frequently while going about our daily routine.

I didn’t know George did a Podcast. I am off to seek it out. I have even taken to watching breakfast television(sigh, i know) online, just for that taste of home.

I suspect that you will find several that are interesting xo

I used to hate WireTap (Jon Goldstein) on CBC, but now we love him. I just listen on the radio, but I assume there are podcasts?

  4. Twwly says:

AND OH how I love Stuart McLean. Scott does a great Stuart impression!!!!!!!!

Laura, I download podcasts directly onto my iphone and wasn’t able to find the snobcast, boo.

Mumma-I like it! I got a bunch, will be listening on the train tomorrow am, thanks!

Ashley-yep, got a bunch of Wire Tapped, it’s pretty good, but I think I listened while I was doing something else (or potentially sleeping) so I probably need to give it a second chance. Stuart McLean=Vinyl Cafe, yes? Yes. Good stuff!

    I highly recommend Radiolab.
It seems to be seasonal on NPR down here.
Whenever I listen to it I get stuck in my car. I can’t leave until I hear the end of the story. Search for it on itunes

when I was referring to RadioLab, this episode was a prime example. I downloaded it over a year ago. It got mentioned on slashdot today.
touching story of Carl Sagan and his wife and their work on the voyager program.

    I will look for RadioLab.

And ps, you mentioned Dead Zone on your blog, it was filmed largely in Niagara-On-The-Lake when I lived there as a kid, it was very exciting. The gazebo where the young woman is murdered is still there (I believe).

  9. Dang it!

That was for a haxored version.
    I’ll find the right one

Last saturday I had to run to the hardware store. I started listening to This American Life and the show was : ” The House at Loon Lake”
I ended up sitting in the parking lot listening to this story that went on forever. Windows rolled up, sweating. I completely lost track of what I was doing.

This is the correct Radiolab link:

First radiolab episode I ever heard was this:

I don’t know why this stuff is so compelling?

I loved that “House at Loon Lake” episode, it was amazing. I listened to it on the train to Windsor, so I was comfy and had my knitting out and it was great. I used to delete my American Life podcasts but now I’ve decided to save them. They’re worth it, to listen to over and over.

You should listen to the Stuff You Should Know podcast. It’s free, and I bet you would LOVE it! It’s interesting and laugh out loud funny. I listen to it when I do my cardio cool down at the gym. It’s a great way to learn a lot and chuckle while doing so. :D

Other CBC podcasts I highly recommend:
    Quirks & Quarks
    White Coat, Black Art
    The Age of Persuasion
I have some other favorites, but these are the best of the best (along with some that you already mentioned in your post).
