I am a quilting b

By in crochet, love, making stuff is good

I started a night school course at The Workroom in Parkdale-the quilting sampler course. I’ve done plenty sewing in my life, but I will be first to admit it’s all been pretty slap-dash. Quilting is the polar opposite of slap-dash, you need to be very precise, measuring, cutting, pinning, all those things I’ve never been too careful about in the past. This is teaching me patience, for sure. The first block I made-in class-I wasn’t thrilled with. I realized, in hindsight, that the red/pink gingham fabric has elastic in it, BOOOO. And sew against shantung silk just made things go all twonky. So I started a new block, same pattern, tonight at home and it turned out marginally better. I still need to get a hang of pinning.

I also need to practice ironing. The second block I made used an old pillow case I had (the centre square) and a weird night dress I bought a million years ago (the pink/black triangles). The rest of it is new.

There was band practice tonight so Shannon and Ari built a nest in the tub and read more Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The looked super cute:

And I took a bunch of self portraits and this is the only one I vaguely liked.

Not my hat.

I like the second block, lots. It’s gonna look fabulous. Assuming you finish it. That’s not a personal dig, far as I know, you complete all projects I only have never seen a completed quilt by anyone that I know. I guess it’s the anti slapdashery.

wow, that’s pretty ambitious lady :) I would love to learn how to quilt but I know that I would either never finish it, or it would take me like 30 years lol.

Good luck though, I would love to see the finished product!

  3. [...] Caitlin is off at quilting school tonight, while Nefarious and I went straight from Montessori school to the theatre where we saw Avatar in digital 3D (not IMAX), the third time I’ve seen it — still enjoying it just as much — and the first for her. She’s been independently asking to see it, which at first I thought was because of classmates, but it turns out none of them have seen it so I think she was basing the desire on Caitlin’s and my conversations about the film. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be too much for her at nearly three hours, but the story is simple and idealistic like a fairy tale, and there’s extremely little profanity, no sexual content, and no inappropriate or gratuitous violence, so I figured it couldn’t hurt. Well, Ashley, next visit I will bring my quilting clobber with me and share with you!

  6. Love the bathtub-book photo it’s great.

Your hair is so long and beautiful! lucky!

I say it over and over, but I really am in desperate need of a hair chop. I’d happily lose at least 6-8 inches. Just don’t make me watch the carnage.

And thanks. Shannon loves this mop o’ mine.
