Hair mystery

By in hmmmm

I noticed a hair (attached to my head) against my dark red wool coat the other day that was white at the end and brown higher up. What the heck? How does that even happen? Today, after considerable digging, I FOUND that hair and pulled it out, to satisfy my curiosity and things got even stranger: from my scalp going towards the end, 15 inches were white, 3 inches dark brown and the final 5 inches white again.

I swear I haven’t dyed my hair in eons, this is all natural colour.  And did I mention that I haven’t had a haircut in 2 years? I need to, I know. 2 feet of hair is too much.

Anyone out there have insight into why my hair might be white brown white?

OK, I have lots of white hair, and all of my whole hair is my natural color. I have had hairs that I’ve noticed when they fell out or whatever that had turned white partway through. So the bottom ends were the regular color, and then they turn white along the way.

I guess that’s how it works? I think I always was under the impression the regular falls out and it grows back white. But apparently not so much.

But I have no idea why yours would change twice. Other than.. Surprise! Pretty!

    Maybe?

The bottom being dark and turning white makes sense. It’s the double change that’s mystifying!

Im a hairdresser, and all i can think of is maybe the follicle died, but instead of the hair dying and falling out, it was still there when the melanin started being produced again. Theres something called multi melanin but white is the lack of melanin so that wouldnt really be an answer.
