If you look up the suggested yarn on Ravelry it should tell you the WPI (wraps per inch) and then you can search for other yarns with the same WPI.

I went to look at yarn today but wound up empty handed because of my total confusion. I do think that baby weight yarn will do too, it seems nice and light, but it’s not that crepe finish. Crepe (or so I’ve read) is yarn that’s more twisted…which makes it sound good because I’d think that would stop it from splitting as some yarn loves to do…

Walmart is ass for yarns these days.

You could probably get away with using sport weight, as fingering weight can be hard to find in some stores. Hope that helps!
