The olden days

By in food

I went to see my parents today in St.Catharines.  We all went to see Madama Butterfly at the movie theatre, part of the Live At The Met series. Butterfly is a pretty huge show, popularity wise, but I am not sold on it’s story. Very sappy and kind of embarassing. I know, she’s 15 and incredibly naive…Well, the singing was great and most of the costumes were very nice. The use of puppetry was very cool and interesting. That said, I think everyone should go to at least one opera in their lifetime, and if it means seeing it broadcast live from the Met at your local movie theatre, so be it. And while I would never claim to be an expert or a snob, I have seen lots of opera in my life and I know what I like.  Next season’s lineup is non stop fantastic shows, not a single dud.

Anyway, on the way to the bus I walked past what used to be my favourite Chinese restaurant in Toronto, The Garden. I ate here regularly in the early 90′s when last call was 1am and no one was ready for bed yet. Not only did they have amazing food, they also served ‘cold tea’, aka beer in a tea pot. We brought Flea there twice and he had the hot’n'sour soup that had him sweating so much he took off his shirt. Anyway, the restaurant’s moved down the street and it’s very swanky looking, no more orange meat dripping on hooks in the front window. I haven’t been, but I am sure some people would think it’s nicer now. Call me nostalgic, but I loved the older version.

I know, eh Joan? Once last call was bumped back an hour, people totally forgot about this little joy. It makes me wonder how many Chinese restaurants were affected by this.
