Green. They are green.

By in a good day, clothes

We had a work Christmas party to go to the other night so I decided to wear festive makeup. And colours. I dread the day when this green shirt is too worn out.

The next picture is me when I am frustrated by how not great my self portraits are. Hm, whatever.

Alien

I have also stopped washing/brushing my hair. No, I don’t want dreadlocks, but I just hate washing it. It gets totally disgusting, my scalp can be pretty itchy after 2 weeks, and when I do wash it, the soapy water rinsing down the drain is black. Literally.

In good news, the shirt I was coveting at Zara was on sale so I got that plus another shirt plus a new pair of jeans. No, I can’t afford it, but my 3 favourite pairs of jeans are falling apart on me. Zara jeans are…uh, low cut. And the website is…uh, annoying.

  1. Yay green! My favourite colour.
Accidental Dreadlocks… I’ve done that before. haha.
When I get really sick of my hair though I tend to shave it all off. Eep!

I wash my hair every day and I hate it, too. But it is so thin and greasy that I just have to. Maybe I can make an experiment over christmas…

I had short hair for years and years, and I loved it. I didn’t wash it then either, haha, but now it’s long and even a tiny trim I stress out over. It’s ridiculous. There are days I dream of having short hair, but I doubt I’d ever go back to it.

Well we can live vicariously through each other’s hair since I sometimes want mine long.

Even though your hair is mostly straight, maybe you should try the Curly Girl method. It’s what I use for my hair. You only wash your hair with conditioner and you only do the scalp once a week at most frequent. (You have to use conditioners that don’t have silicone, though.) My head never looks greasy. I am also super lazy about washing my hair because it’s very long and it also gets tangled really fast, so I’m always in the shower trying to pull my hair apart.

  6. Caitlin Jane says:

Huh, that sounds intriguing, Rach. What brands of conditioner do you recommend? I have one that is cheap, a blue bottle with coconut smelling stuff, I get it because I like the smell.

Actually, all summer I did that, after swimming, I would rinse my hair with water and then condition it and let it air dry, but it was looking ratty pretty quickly.

    Off to google Curly Girl.

  7. Rach says:

People really like V05 and Suave for it. I use this generic brand from Target that comes in a tub called Biotresse. At first it is daunting trying to find a conditioner without silicone (mostly just ingredients that end in -cone) but then once you’ve figured out a few it’s pretty easy.

  8. sarah says:

i have curly hair and use the curly girl method. shampoo has not touched my hair in 15 years.
that said, the same theory applies to straight hair.
your hair produces more oil to make up for the loss of natural oils the shampoo just striped your hair of. if you stop washing for long enough, eventually your scalp will give up producing oil.

  9. sarah says:

also i wouldnt sware off -cones simply because you are told to. they work for some people. the theory is that they are not water solluable, so without shampoo they build up, but i find that to be untrue.
i use tresemme, which is 3 bucks for a huge bottle.

  10. Allahkat says:

I can check and see at work if we have any cone-less conditioners.

  11. Caitlin Jane says:

Shannon’s going to join me on this shampoo-free quest. His hair is actually curly, for real, sort of. When we get back from vay-kay I will get cone-free conditioner and a small bottle of clarifying shampoo for the last time!

And is plopping as fun as it’s name?

  12. Rach says:

I don’t like plopping because I am bad at it and it makes my hair look stringy.

For awhile I was taking pictures to document my hair when I started doing this. I put some in a facebook album so you could see. I think the healthiness in my hair is evident, although I didn’t take a lot where you can see my scalp because I was trying to see how it affected my curliness more than anything.

  13. sarah says:

i dont plop simply because i dont need to. i have no need for MORE volume at my roots. i could do with less.

  14. Ah the Curly Girly No-Poo method.
    Love it.

  15. Caitlin Jane says:

I almost feel weird about it because of all the whining I did about losing (and subsequently finding) my flat iron. I suppose I can retire it. It just seems to make sense to not fight nature, and by golly, Rach, your hair looks GREAT.

  16. Caitlin Jane says:

Ok, went to Shopper’s today, no V05, which surprised me, but there were other Alberto products-they all had -cones in them. I forgot to look at Suave, but I looked at…well, I looked at EVERYTHING I think, which was very discouraging. I ended up buying carrot conditioner, it smells ok and there aren’t -cones in it. This one:

I also got hair cream (which was surprisingly limited in availability), Marc Anthony Strictly Curls. Again, no -cones but it has lots of -xanes so maybe it’s not so great.

I conditioned this morning then plopped but we were heading out so my hair ended up freezing in this lovely snowy weather we’re experiencing here. I am trying again tomorrow with the new stuff and will see how it all goes.

I’m going to be keeping track of how this goes for you guys. My hair is wavy/curly underneath- not so much on top because of overprocessing. I never brush my hair. It makes it frizzy and I get breakage easily. HOWEVER! I am a silicone girl ;) My bathroom is filled to the brim with mega doses of damage control.

Tho, I’ve been growing my hair out for some time now and while pregnant/nursing, I wont dye it.. so I figure there is probably no better time then to get it nice and healthy.

Can’t wait to see what comes of this, Caitlin. I had no idea what Shannon was talking about on his blog. :)

  18. Dara says:

I also hate washing my hair! But unfortunately, I love conditioner because i tend to over process my hair, so tend to lean towards things that replenish the proteins.
