I finally finished sock scarf #1. It’s not terribly long and the yarn is a little itchy (which I think can be cured by washing it) but I really like it. Included in the picture is the world’s tastiest necklace-at least according to Emily’s children. I forgot to wear it the last time I saw them and they were heartbroken. Poor wee things.
Pattern:
Using self striping sock yarn and an E hook, I did 4 ripples and they work like this:
Chain a multiple of 9 and one turning chain (so I chained 37), turn, skip the first and single chain all the way along to make a strong start. That makes 36 stitches. Turn.
*Skip the first chain, dc in second, third, fourth, 3 dc in fifth, dc in next three sc, skip next sc, repeat ad nauseum until you run out of yarn.
It’s easy because all you do is count three. Three three three three three…The second one, that isn’t finished yet (and that I am hoping to sell!), is only 2 ripples, and I did it with six dc, then a three dc cluster, then six dc, skip 2, etc. A wider ripple, narrower(it adds up to 3o stitches) and it will be longer.
Is that confusing? I know that the easiest pattern is the most confusing, this ripple business took a while to wrap my brain around.
Next project:
I got a new book on the weekend, Basic Crochet Stitches by Erika Knight and it’s awesome. Full of pretty stitches that will work well for mittens. Just don’t ask me for the pattern when they are done: my brain will explode and wreck my computer.
I am basing the pattern on the mitts I got at Target last year for $2. They’re cute and fit perfectly. My mitts will have a slit in the thumb and mid way on the palm to poke out fingers like the Freehands gloves that were on Boingboing. Now that I am addicted to improving my brain with my DS, I need to be able to use my fingers and thumbs, even in cold weather.
Guess who I borrowed the ruler from? :)

Scarf is lovely!! Also loved that you had a Google to Austin hair dressers. Well done. Lots of love Mum xo
A google to what? What does that mean?
My second scarf, the blue/brown/charcoal one is almost finished. Do you think Bruce or Bill might be interested? Bruce loved the first one, maybe a slightly more manly colour would appeal to him? Could you ask please?
It’s nice of Shannon to lend you his ruler.
He’s good like that. It was his tiara I was wearing in the zombie march. I had to promise my first born if even one speck of blood got on it.
I HOPE THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF YOUR HEAD DIDN’T WARP IT AT ALL HAR HAR HAR HAR!
I’ll certainly ask them about colours – though “manly” I’m certain is best. They will be thrilled I’m sure. I’m home on the 28th and that will be my first chance to ask, Mum xo
Kevin has put in a request for a Doctor Who scarf. And he knows I don’t know how to knit, so he told me to ask if you can do anything.
Also: I told him, “Oh yeah? Well they have a ZOMBIE WALK in Toronto!” and now he wants to move there more than ever.
Is it really as expensive as everyone says? The way some people describe it sounds a little exaggerated, but when I look at rental prices on craigslist it does seem a little pricey.
i attempted the sock scarf pattern and it doesn’t seem to be working for me. i’m not sure if i’m missing something or what, but i follow the instructions you posted and i keep ending up with a larger and larger crescent shaped bit of crocheting. i’m not sure what i’m doing wrong or what i’m missing. hmm. any ideas? since you did so much frogging around i’m sure you’ve encountered a similar result and might have some idea what it is that i’m doing or not doing.
Hmm, Treyci, I don’t know. I am not much of a pattern writer, my instructions always have numbers and + signs.
After you do the initial chain (my first scarf was 37)turn, skip the first chain and single chain all the way down, that’s 36 stitches. Turn.
Skip the first chain, dc, dc, dc, 3 dc’s in the next chain, dc, dc, dc, skip 2 chains, dc, dc, dc, 3 dc’s in the next chain, dc, dc, dc, skip 2, etc…til the end. Turn.
And repeat. Did I miss a turn instruction? Probably, that’s what it sounds like. Or I missed a skip. Sorry!!! At least I know (probably better than most) how un-heart breaking it is to frog out mistakes. That’s why I quit knitting, too hard to fix things!
Now I am worried I am just repeating myself. I will try to post a real close up of both scarves to point out the stitches.
