They’re grape

By in food

I spent a couple days at my mom’s house, as you already know, and we went to the market early Saturday morning. The only thing I got there was a giant bag of grapes for $2. Oh, I got a quesadilla there too, but I ate that as we were walking. Anyway, the grapes are SO good. Real Niagara grapes, oh my, they really bring me back to my childhood. I think that was before they’d invented seedless globe grapes you get at the grocery store-which are nice too-but you can’t compare the flavour. These taste so intensely grape-y.

Mine all mine

I have no idea what kind of grapes they are, the purple ones are bigger and most likely juice grapes, maybe concords. Their flavour is so intense, and they have that texture, when they are squeezed and the middle pops out like an eyeball. The green ones might be champagne grapes, they are really small, tangier in taste and not as ‘snotty’ texturally as we used to say a million years ago.

Ari tried one and spat it out. Which is good news for me!

Really cold green grapes are one of the few fruits I can stand to eat. The texture of most fruits just completely gross me out.

    Oh, Ali. You’re so weird.

The purple ones ARE concords. This is their season. They are used to make purple grape juice which explains why they are so grapey. They are REALLY good frozen, the skin just pops off and they taste like grape popsicle. I usually eat so many my fingers and mouth are all purple for days and I get a tummy ache….

I would like to imagine that you meant that endearingly.

When I was a kid, I used to spit the bitter skins of concord grapes out in favour of eating the sour-y fruit instead. Ontario Grappa makers (are there any?) should have found me then and we could have been rich by now.

Oh Ali! Weird is a good thing!

I froze the last handful of the grapes, can’t wait to suck them back.

When I do eat them, raw, I pop it in my mouth, squeeze out the eyeball part and swallow it whole as I don’t like crunching on the pips. Then I swallow the skin, which is sour and sweet at the same time, but I think I threw that part out too, when I was a kid. Now I wish I’d bought more.
